Fix Mouse Pointer Disappears

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown

When the mouse is malfunctioning, it will often disappear for short and long periods of time. To resolve this issue, you'll have to try a few different solutions since there may be more than one issue affecting your disappearing mouse. Following are the steps given to resolve such issue.

1). Clean the bottom of your laser lens mouse with a damp cloth. Dirt can build up on the lens and block the light that transmits to the mouse. If you have a mouse with a ball, turn the outer casing of the ball's compartment counter-clockwise, carefully remove the ball and clean it with a damp cloth. Dry the laser lens or ball with a paper towel.

2). Plug your USB mouse into another USB port on your computer. Sometimes USB ports can stop working.
3). Run a virus scan on your computer and remove any malware. Certain malware can cause mouse cursors to disappear.

4). Replace the batteries in your mouse.

5). Purchase a new mouse. Just like any computer hardware, a mouse can simply become defective after prolonged use.

What You Must Backup While Replacing a Computer

Posted on 11:00 by Unknown

Backing up and transferring data from an old computer system to a new one could be a challenged task.  Before you start taking backup, make sure that Windows has a restore point created. Prioritize which files you back up and store on removable media. Technically you should backup the system registry, program and application files, operating systems and, if managing a network, the security settings for end users on first priority.
System Registry
The system registry is very important to take backup, because the system registry contains information about the programs stored on the computer, including registration keys, software license keys and program access keys. The built-in Windows utility software or any third-party data protection program can be used to back up the registry.

General files
Back up general files also at the time of replacing a computer, the files that are associated to applications are very important. If a program calls for a file on the new system and does not find it, the program will not run. Prioritize files for backup based on their usage: for example, Microsoft Excel files that a user accesses daily should have a high backup priority.

Operating System
Backup the operating system to the recent restore point, in case there is a problem while restoring the operating system; the system restore can be used to recover from the issue.

Network Settings
When transferring applications to a new server in a network environment, the network administrator will typically back up the entire user IDs and passwords from the old computer then transfer these settings to the new computer. The backup and migration of user IDs and passwords makes it possible for users to sign on to the new server without creating new user profiles and user identification files.

Use an iTouch as a Removable Disk Drive

Posted on 05:30 by Unknown

Apple's iPod Touch comes in three different sizes such as: 8 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB and is similar to the iPhone in both appearance and function wise. Because it has a large amount of storage capability, you can use it as a removable hard drive for your files. Earlier editions of the iPod allowed you to use the player as a hard drive, but the Touch no longer allows this; however, you can still accomplish this using third-party software.

1). Download and install TouchCopy to your computer (see Resources). TouchCopy is not free, though it offers a free trial. TouchCopy works with all models of iPod Touch, and allows you to transfer data back and forth from your computer, whether Mac or Windows, to your iPod as if it were an external hard drive. Installation is straightforward; download the .dmg file for a Mac, or the .exe file for Windows, double-click it and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

2). Tap the "App Store" icon on your Touch, and type "Discover" in the search box. Choose the first free app categorized under "Productivity." Download and install Discover to your Touch by following the on-screen instructions. Discover is a free app that allows you to transfer files to and from the iPhone and iPod Touch over a Wi-Fi network. It also allows you to access public and private servers on the Internet with the same devices.

3). Download and install iPhoneBrowser to your computer (see Resources). This is another free open-source application that allows you to browse the Touch as if it were a regular external hard drive.

Reset Ink Settings in Canon iP1800

Posted on 05:30 by Unknown

If your Canon Pixma iP1800 printer is low on ink, you can refill the ink cartridge yourself to avoid having to purchase new cartridges. If you choose to do this, you will also need to manually reset the ink setting of your printer. This is a simple procedure that should take you no more than 15 minutes to complete. This procedure works for both the color and black ink cartridges.

1). Place a strip of tape over the contact pads on the top row of the cartridge.

2). Place the ink cartridge into the printer and then remove it once you receive the "Cartridge Not Inserted" message.
3). Place a strip of tape over the contact pads on the second top row. Do not remove the first strip of tape.
4). Place the ink cartridge into the printer and then remove it once you receive the "Cartridge Not Inserted" message.

5). Remove the tape from both rows and insert the cartridges into the printer. This will reset the ink level of your Canon Pixma iP1800 printer.

Remove Ribbon Cables

Posted on 05:59 by Unknown

Ribbon cables are made of hard plastic. Their purpose is to protect the data stripes that they carry inside. At one end of the data stripes are pins that attach to connecting devices. You will find these ribbon cables especially in older computers that use data stripes to send and receive signals between internal components. To avoid spending money on a technician, it is useful to know how to remove ribbon cables yourself when replacing the devices in your computer.

1). Wear antistatic stripe on one of your wrists before opening the outer case of a computer. This is to prevent static electricity from damaging the internal electronic components.
2). Peel any tape, glue or epoxy securing the connector in place.
3). Pull upward on the flat plastic retainer clip that is seated on top of the cable connector. This will release the cable connector pins from the device that the ribbon cable is connected to. If you find the retainer clip is hard to pull open, insert a flathead screwdriver at the seams to help.

4). Grasp the sides of the connector firmly with one hand. Hold the device that the connector pins are connected to in your other hand.

5). Pull the ribbon connector away gently in a straight line from the connecting device to avoid breaking the connecting pins at the ends. Never pull on the ribbon cable itself or you risk damaging the data stripes inside.

Locate Lost Files

Posted on 11:00 by Unknown

There are instances when files are accidentally deleted or moved to another location, particularly when you share the computer with multiple other users. The good thing is that there are several options you can try in order to locate lost files.

1). Click "Start," and type the file name or a part of the file name in the "Search" box. Files that match the keywords will automatically appear in the search results as you type. Click the file name to open. If you want to search files inside a particular folder, open the folder and type the file name or keywords in the "Search" bar in the upper right corner of the window. For more advanced searching, proceed to the next step.
2). Browse through the search results. Under "Search again in," click "Custom" to search in a specific location; "Computer" for the system to search the entire computer; "Library" to search in libraries; or "Internet" to search online.
3). Check in your Recycle Bin. If the file is no longer in its previous location, it may have been accidentally deleted. Browse for the file, right-click the file name, and select "Restore this item."

4). Restore a lost file from a restore point or from a backup if the file is not in the Recycle Bin or if you cannot search for it in the system. If you know the folder where the files were previously located, right-click the folder, and then click "Restore previous versions." Under "File versions," you will see a list of the folder's previous versions saved as a backup or restore point. Click the file, and select "Open" to view the previous version. If you are sure that you want to restore that version of the folder, select "Restore."
